What is a constellation board?
A constellation board is a flat surface on which small figures stand for the people and forces in a situation. Where each figure stands, how far it is from the others and which way it faces carry the meaning. Moving one figure shows what that change would do to the rest.
The short definition
A constellation board, called a Systembrett in German, is a working surface with movable figures. Each figure represents one element of a system: a person, a role, a team, a rule, a fear, a goal. The coach or client places them so that the spatial arrangement matches how the situation feels from the inside.
Three properties of the arrangement do the work. Distance shows closeness or its absence. Direction shows attention: who is looking at whom, and who is turned away. Position within the whole shows centrality, so an element at the edge is at the edge for a reason worth asking about.
Why it works at all
The board externalizes. An inner picture that was only felt becomes something on a table that two people can look at together and point to. That shift, from carrying the situation to observing it, is most of the method.
Where it came from
The board grew out of family therapy. Kurt Ludewig and Ulrich Wilken were among those who developed the family board, also called the Familienbrett or Beziehungsbrett, as a way to make family structures visible without asking anyone to act them out.
The name Systembrett, meaning system board, was published in 2006 by Wolfgang Polt and Markus Rimser. Their contribution was widening the frame: if the method works for a family, it works for any system, so teams, organizations, decisions and inner conflicts came into scope.
Today it is standard equipment in systemic coaching, supervision, mediation and organizational development, and it is taught in most systemic training programs.
What a constellation board is not
- It is not a diagnosis. The board shows one person's picture of a situation on one day, not an objective fact about anybody in it.
- It is not a family constellation in the classic sense. That method uses people in a room as representatives. A board does the same work with figures, one to one, and asks nothing of a stranger.
- It is not a decision machine. It makes the forces in a decision visible. Which one wins is still a human choice.
- It is not therapy. A board can surface material that belongs in therapy, and noticing that line is part of a coach's job.

Wooden board or online board
A wooden board with hand-carved figures has weight and texture, and picking a figure up is part of the thinking. An online board loses that. In exchange it works when the two of you are not in the same room, it can draw what a figure actually sees from where it stands, and it can measure distances instead of leaving them to be estimated.
Most coaches who use both keep the wooden board for the room and the online board for everything else.

- Placing the figures usually takes a few minutes. The conversation that follows takes as long as it takes, often twenty to forty minutes for one system.
